Nutrition in pregnancy

 

We all know that good nutrition is important, but it becomes even more important when you are planning to conceive, are already pregnant or are breastfeeding.

What you eat has a huge impact on your health, but it also has a major impact on your unborn baby’s growth and development – not only in the womb, but for their whole life. A mum-to-be has higher nutrient needs than at any other time in her life.

Ideally, prior to conceiving, begin to eat well by choosing foods that are nutrient dense. This means foods that are packed full of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. By eating a variety of foods from all five food groups – whole grain cereals, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat or other sources of protein you can begin to build the stores of important nutrients needed for a strong healthy pregnancy.

The need for certain nutrients increase during this time and supplementation is recommended for two essential nutrients before and during pregnancy – Folic Acid and Iodine – as it is not possible to meet the increased requirements from diet alone.
