The importance of supplementing your pre‑conception diet
Never in a woman’s life is nutrition as important as it is when she is trying to conceive.
Preparing her body for conception can improve a woman’s chances of falling pregnant, and having a healthy pregnancy and baby.
What she eats and her body’s stores will help ensure that her body will be nutrient rich, and in its prime so as to be able to nurture a growing baby for the next nine months and beyond.
Medical professionals highly recommend that women who are trying to conceive and who are already pregnant, take a pregnancy supplement.

Folic Acid
Folic Acid is essential for the healthy development of babies in early pregnancy as it helps protect against birth defects. In the first four to six weeks of pregnancy, the neural tube closes and fuses. This tube later becomes the baby’s brain and spinal cord. A diet low in Folic Acid can increase the chances of the neural tube not closing properly, which can result in a neural tube defect such as Spina Bifida.
Why do women need more Folic Acid before conception?
The neural tube closes within the first few weeks of pregnancy, so it is vital that there is enough Folic Acid in the mother’s diet before conception. As Folic Acid requirements increase substantially in pregnancy, it is recommended that women take Folic Acid three months prior to conception and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Iodine
Iodine requirements increase substantially in pregnancy and lactation to support the development of the baby’s brain and nervous system, as well as the mothers thyroid function.
Why do women need Iodine before conception?
As it can take time to build up the higher level of nutrients needed for a baby’s healthy development, an Iodine supplement is recommended when women are planning for pregnancy.
MamaCare provides 26 essential nutrients for pregnancy including Iodine.

There is a growing body of evidence showing that a mother’s diet and other lifestyle factors before and during pregnancy have the ability to affect offspring health through epigenetic programming.
“The first 1000 days, from pre-conception until a child’s second birthday are fundamental as epigenetic programming over this time helps to define the child’s genetic profile.
Ensuring good nutrition throughout pregnancy can ensure the best possible outcome for the developing foetus, during childhood and into adulthood.”
